Curriculum

a structured plan of learning that outlines the subjects, topics, skills, and objectives that students are expected to study and achieve during a course or program. It serves as a roadmap for teaching and learning, guiding both educators and students through what needs to be covered over a specific period, such as a school year or semester.

Teaching children is not about filling a bucket, but lighting a fire.

When I first stepped into the classroom, I was amazed by how the teacher managed everything so seamlessly. The class was well-organized, and the students stayed engaged from beginning to end. This experience made me realize how impactful a well-prepared and dynamic learning environment can be for young learners.

The curriculum at Future School encompasses various subjects, including languages (Vietnamese, Integrated English, and Cambridge English), mathematics (Vietnamese and English math), science (social and natural sciences, history, geography, and English science), arts (dance, fine arts, craft-engineering, and music performances), technology (scientific, moral, and soft skills), and sports (physical education, swimming, cycling, and martial arts). This diverse curriculum aims to foster well-rounded individuals with a wide range of skills and knowledge.

To ensure effective lesson delivery, we first held a meeting with our supervisor from Dong Thap University, Ms. Lam, who was assigned to oversee our subject. Ms. Lam encouraged us to teach with confidence and cultural awareness, reminding us that our students are Vietnamese and do not have English as their primary language. As a result, we made adjustments to our lessons, including adding Vietnamese translations, especially for instructions in activities, to enhance understanding and engagement.

Since I teach Grades 1 and 2, I need to be well-prepared for an energetic and engaging teaching approach. This includes planning interactive activities that capture young learners' attention and, importantly, preparing to overcome the language barrier. As their primary language is Vietnamese, I need to translate my instructions and their responses to ensure effective communication and understanding. Luckily, both my buddies are willing to help me translate all my lesson into Vietnamese.

My buddy Nha and I visited Leo’s Coffee Shop, where we exchanged valuable tips on how to tailor my lessons to the specific types of students I will be teaching. She shared that "Instructions for activities should be kept as simple and straightforward as possible. Speak at a slow, clear pace” this was challenging for me since I’m used to speaking fast and when I already teaching I forgot to pause when I’m speaking. However, I manage to do it, and after every demo my buddy My An tour around me in the city to freshen up. So even with little time, I was able to create 4 lesson plans.
